Born in Warsaw of Jewish ancestry Herman came to Britain at the start of World War II. Settling in South Wales and working in a broadly expressionist style the Welsh mining community became the main artistic focus for Herman’s ‘modern humanism’. One of his major works was a mural entitled Miners for the Festival of Britain in 1951.

Herman received much public acclaim being awarded a gold medal for his services to Welsh Art, being a John Moore’s prize winner, made a Royal Academician and awarded an O.B.E.
